Introduction

Beverages are the fastest — and often the most hidden — way sugar enters the bloodstream. A drink that looks innocent can carry as much sugar as a full meal, so drinks deserve as much attention as food on a diabetes plan.

The Science

Liquid sugar acts fast

Because drinks contain little or no fibre to slow absorption, their sugar reaches the blood quickly. Fruit juice loses the fibre of whole fruit, and sugary sodas and energy drinks deliver a rapid glucose load.

Diet drinks are not a free pass

Zero-sugar and "diet" versions avoid the immediate glucose spike, but the source still advises caution around them and around energy drinks of every kind, which are best avoided.

Coffee and tea

Plain, unsweetened coffee and tea are the safer everyday choices and may influence insulin sensitivity; the trouble starts with the add-ons — 3-in-1 mixes, karak with sugar and sweetened instant blends.
